History

Much has happened since the grandfather of LINAK’s present managing director and owner established his company, Christian Jensen Machine Builder, in 1907. When Bent Jensen took over in 1976, the company manufactured flat belt pulleys, V-belt pulleys, grinding mills for preparation of corn and forges to technical schools. Something quite different from the state-of-the-art products, which are manufactured at LINAK today.

The company was founded in 1907 by Bent Jensen’s grandfather under the name “Christian Jensen Machine Builder”.

BENT JENSEN TAKES OVER THE COMPANY
When Bent Jensen as a newly graduated mechanical engineer took over the family company, Christian Jensen and Sons, after his father in 1976, it went through a remarkable transformation. At first he was not quite enthusiastic about becoming the new owner of the family company with seven employees. He would have preferred to go abroad to work, but his father succeeded in persuading him to stay at home.

Therefore, Bent Jensen gave himself five years to develop a new product while he used the years in-between to rationalise the existing production. After only three years, he achieved his goal as he came up with an idea - the linear actuator that was launched shortly after.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE FIRST ACTUATOR
Bent Jensen originated the idea of the linear actuator when working on developing a wheelchair for a disabled fellow student who had lost his mobility in an accident. Even then, the goal was to develop products that improve people’s quality of life and working environment.

Nonetheless, the linear actuator turned out to be useful for other purposes as well. At first the linear actuator was sold to the agricultural sector where it was used to automatically operate the spout on forage harvesters. Bowden cables or hydraulics had previously done this. However, there seemed not to be any limits to the applications of the linear actuator as it soon became obvious that the actuator also could facilitate improvements in ergonomics in various workplaces such as hospitals, nursing homes, offices and other industries.

EXPANSION
Since the company began manufacturing linear actuators in 1980, it has grown rapidly. In 1984 the company changed its name to LINAK and shortly after LINAK expanded its marketplace to include foreign markets as well by opening its first sales office abroad, that is in Sweden in 1985. LINAK also expanded its facilities in Denmark as it added an electronics department in 1986, so that it could manufacture actuators as well as electronic controls to match. In the years hereafter a tremendous development within the electronics field took place. Hence, LINAK has expanded its physical frames 13 times since 1986.

LINAK’s market abroad also increased further due to the establishment of the first subsidiary abroad, to be exact, in Great Britain in 1990. Since then LINAK has opened one or two subsidiaries each year all over the world. Over the past decade LINAK has also established close relationships with distributors in many countries. Moreover, the expansion continued into the US market, where a 5,000m² plant, containing both production and sales facilities was built in 1999. However, the factory only concentrates on producing CARELINE and HOMELINE products for the US market.

LINAK’s first autonomous division:
the DESKLINE factory.

Owing to great success and demand for electrical linear actuator systems, LINAK had to expand its production and office facilities in Denmark as well. Therefore, LINAK constructed a new round factory building in 2002 next to the existing facilities at the Group Headquarters in Denmark. The new factory building, which is an autonomous division, concentrates on the DESKLINE and HOMELINE products.

LINAK TODAY
Due to all the expansions both in Denmark and abroad, LINAK is now an international company and the world leader in designing and manufacturing electric linear actuator systems. At present LINAK is represented in several countries all over the world either through subsidiaries or distributors; and it is still expanding its markets.
